Guy Régis Jr’s De toute la terre le grand effarement (And the Whole World Quakes) invites its audiences and readers to wake and witness in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Contextualizing the theme of watchfulness within the realities of the earthquake’s aftermath, I show how the play keeps watch on the coloniality of the catastrophe and on the humanity of the Haitian people, cultivating a “collective vigil” (to quote an interview with the author) by facilitating intersecting modes of witnessing from differently positioned spectators/readers and by looking back at their looking. Under the structuring presence of the Vodou divinity Ezili, I argue that the play explodes this central theme of watchfulness by holding up a revealing, unsettling mirror that calls on readers/spectators to embrace polyamorous, shifting, unresolved, disjointed interpretative strategies, and to submit to unpredictability, in order to dream ultimately of a new humanity.
