Integrated Behavioral Health in a Sleep Subspecialty Clinic
摘要
An estimated 25–40% of the pediatric population experience some type of sleep difficulty that in turn can impact many facets of their life and environment. Additionally, it is not uncommon for sleep problems to be influenced or caused by mental health concerns. Deficits in sleep can result in problems with attention, behavioral issues, and learning problems and can increase the risk of injuries, accidents, depression, obesity, and diabetes. Most pediatric sleep disturbances are resolved in a relatively short time period, with significant improvement observed in six meetings or less. Because of this, the integration of behavioral health specialists (i.e., psychologists) into this setting is suggested. This chapter will provide information on the role of integrated behavioral health in a sleep subspecialty clinic, an overview of pediatric sleep, a few common pediatric sleep disorders, and associated interventions/therapies among children and adolescents.
