In the school environment, skin infections often raise concerns for easy spread to other students. However, transmission varies and not all skin infections require strict contact precautions. A general rule for skin infections is that students without a fever can be evaluated first by the school nurse, whereas febrile students with a rash should be seen more urgently by their pediatrician, urgent care, or emergency department provider. It is important to have increased concern for immunocompromised students, such as children with type I diabetes mellitus, sickle cell disease, autoimmune disorders, or cancer. This cohort is at risk for more severe infections.
