Psychosis is an experience characterized by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech or behavior, and negative symptoms. Psychosis can be due to medical or psychiatric disorders. The way psychosis is framed within a culture plays a role in how individuals perceive and talk about their experiences and can contribute to stigma, which discourages some from seeking help. Early identification and intervention for psychosis has shown to improve outcomes and recovery. School-based health providers are ideally positioned to provide early identification due to their regular contact with students and their families. This chapter discusses identification and intervention for psychosis in children and adolescents.
