As rates of mental illness increase in the general population as well as the school population, so too does the need for prescribing psychiatric medications. This chapter presents two clinical cases, which illustrate several key points. We also discuss general principles of psychiatric prescribing in the pediatric population; summarize the types of psychiatric medication; review their indications, contraindications and adverse effects; and list clinical pearls to keep in mind.
