Cervical spine injuries are uncommon, but potentially devastating injuries which can occur in the school or athletic setting. Cervical spine injury should be suspected in any child with traumatic injury who complains of neck pain, difficulty moving the neck, or sensory or motor deficits. Immobilization should be performed in all cases of potential cervical spine injury. Clinical clearance, or ruling out injury without imaging should be done only by personnel with significant experience. Patients should be immobilized and transferred to an emergency department in any cases of uncertainty.
