This chapter deals with the quantization of the electromagnetic field and introduces the concept of photon as a quantum of excitation of the electromagnetic field by showing that each mode of the electromagnetic field behaves like a linear harmonic oscillator. Annihilation and creation operators of individual modes of the electromagnetic field are introduced and an expression for the electric field operator is obtained.

摘要

This chapter deals with the quantization of the electromagnetic field and introduces the concept of photon as a quantum of excitation of the electromagnetic field by showing that each mode of the electromagnetic field behaves like a linear harmonic oscillator.
