This chapter discusses the phenomenon of optical parametric amplification using second-order nonlinear effects in optical waveguides. Degenerate and nondegenerate parametric amplifiers are discussed and expressions for gain coefficient in the two cases are derived. Both phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive amplifiers and the bandwidth of amplification are discussed.
