This chapter discusses the phenomenon of second harmonic generation (SHG) in optical waveguidesOptical waveguides and the basic concepts of phase matching and quasi phase matching. Coupled mode equations are derived leading to expression for efficiency of SHG. Also discussed are bandwidths of second harmonic generation and the effective nonlinear coefficientEffective nonlinear coefficient that is responsible for the second harmonic generation.
