Nonlinear optical effects play a very important role in integrated quantum photonics and are used in the generation of entangled photon pairs, squeezed states, etc. This chapter presents discussion on the generation of second-order nonlinear polarization in a medium that results in the generation of second harmonic and sum and difference frequency. Calculation of the generated nonlinear polarization dependent on the nonlinear coefficient of the medium the state of polarization of the propagating modes is presented. The results presented here are used in later chapters.
