In this chapter, we explore what critical incidents are, detailing Critical Incident Commander experiences in this role and some of the types of incidents involved in this type of incident command work. We then explore the work involved in critical incidents, including establishing a command post, formulating executable plans, and the use of information gleaned through intelligence to inform response decisions. This chapter then moves into examining the role of the CIC, including examining who is selected and why for assuming responsibility for dealing with these types of seriously dangerous events. Throughout, we draw on their stories, perceptions, and experiences to illustrate the work they do and why they make the types of choices they do to bring dangerous situations to a successful close.
