Building a Strong Foundation: Study on Use of Construction and Demolition Waste in Stone Columns

The stone column method is a ground improvement technique used to enhance the load-bearing capacity of weak or challenging ground conditions. It is an effective solution for soft clays, silts, and loose sands to improve their engineering behaviour by speeding up the consolidation process through improved drainage pathways, which contributes to reinforcing the soil and reducing the settlement of weak soil. Moreover, pile foundations may be costly for constructing low- to medium-rise buildings on soft soil. Stone columns are suitable under such circumstances. There are various applications for stone columns including oil tank foundations, embankments, slope stabilization, and the construction of tall buildings. Natural aggregates are most commonly used in stone columns because of their higher stiffness than the surrounding soil. The use of natural aggregate raises significant environmental concerns due to its extensive application in the construction sector. The extraction rate of natural aggregates exceeds the rate at which they can be naturally replenished. The environmental impact is increased by the carbon footprint generated through aggregate mining and associated activities. Therefore, it is essential to identify sustainable alternatives to natural materials for use in geotechnical applications and construction. Waste materials have been used more frequently in place of natural aggregate in stone columns in recent years. Among these types, construction and demolition waste is the most common. Different studies use varying ratios of natural aggregate to construction and demolition waste. This paper offers an overview of the use of construction and demolition waste in stone columns. It concludes that incorporating these waste into stone columns is an effective approach, contributing to recycling initiatives and advancing environmental sustainability.
