Refinements on Accelerated Corrosion Testing—Development of Sustainable, Reproducible Indicator Plates

The Material-Checker project (MAT-CH) covers the most common corrosion pollution test, the so-called Oddy test, which has been widely performed to examine material used in museums and collections. Besides many advantages, the test is also known for its limitations regarding inconsistent equipment, varying procedures and subjective evaluation leading to ongoing revisions. Project MAT-CH aims to innovate the Oddy test and thus hopes to contribute to a higher standard in pollution control. While the project initially focused on the reaction vessel, recent focal point emphasises on the development of sustainable indicator plates. In opposition to the bulk metals of the Oddy test, MAT-CH indicators will consist of thin metal-coated glass substrates, which lead to enhanced precision, replicability, and sustainability. The paper describes the project objectives, as well as the development process and evaluation of samples specifying layer thickness, density, homogeneity, and surface roughness. Furthermore, the examination of prototypes, including performance and in-situ tests, as well as results from microscopy and instrumental analysis are discussed.
