Qualitative Study of Students’ Emotional Responses and Coping Strategies in Relation to Stress in Higher Education
摘要
Background: This study is based on an examination of students’ stress management strategies, which has become one of the most important life skills in the 21st century. As employers recognise the importance of managing this inhibiting factor created by a fast-paced world, teaching and supporting stress management is becoming increasingly important in modern higher education. The aims of the study are to examine the stress patterns of the students and their strategies for coping with stress, and to determine whether training in stress management awareness can help them cope with stress effectively. The research participants were students at Óbuda University, attending a stress management course. The study included the responses of 72 volunteer students over three semesters. Open-ended questions and text analysis, categorization, and statistical analysis were used to collect and analyse the data used in the study. Academic performance, exams and study, and personal relationships were the most common stressors. Relaxation techniques are the most common coping strategies for acute stressors, while grounding techniques and physical activities are favoured for chronic stressors. This study confirms that students can benefit from an effective stress management course and that developing skills in using coping strategies is an important part of dealing with stress-related issues.
