This paper aims to study pigments preserved on the birch frame of “gugu” headdresses from a medieval grave in the Rostov region dating to the end of the 13th – Early 14th centuries. Visual examination of the birch structural elements revealed a red paint layer on their external surface. The study of this layer found that it is an iron-based red pigment mixed with egg yolk. The follow-up study using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy determined the chemical composition of the pigment, revealing hematite as its major component.

摘要

This paper aims to study pigments preserved on the birch frame of “gugu” headdresses from a medieval grave in the Rostov region dating to the end of the 13th – Early 14th centuries. Visual examination of the birch structural elements revealed a red paint layer on their external surface. The study of this layer found that it is an iron-based red pigment mixed with egg yolk. The follow-up study using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy determined the chemical composition of the pigment, revealing hematite as its major component.
