This paper presents the results of a study of the brick paste from the 4–7th centuries CE buildings of the ancient polis Ghuenos and Markul settlement, which was a large settlement of Apsilae ancestors of the modern Abkhazians. The sites are located 10 km apart on the Black Sea coast in eastern Abkhazia. Seventeen specimens from the Markul settlement and ten specimens from Ghuenos were examined using the methodology developed by Alexander A. Bobrinsky and X-ray diffraction phase analysis (XRPD). Differences in the clay and added sand temper at each site were revealed. The brick specimens were prepared at different locations. Both workshops were located in the same geological region previously discovered by the authors of this study. This is evidenced by the substantial number of ore mineral hematite particles in the raw material (clay) and the added sand temper used for the brick paste. In each site the particular traditions of paste compounding dominate. They are also present at other sites but in different proportions. Probably, the differences in the paste recipes are due to the different teams of craftsmen-brickmakers.
