The ICP-MS Analysis of Flint Exploitation in the 8 ka cal BP Old Neolithic Layer 6/7 at the Alebastroviy Zavod Rockshelter in the Elbrus Region, North Caucasus

This paper reports new data on flint procurement in the Neolithic layer 6/7 at the Alebastroviy Zavod Rockshelter in the north-central Caucasus (Russia), dated from 8150 ± 130 to 9180 ± 220 cal BP. For the geochemical analysis of flint artifacts and source samples, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method was used. The results show that the Neolithic inhabitants of the rockshelter predominantly used Cretaceous high-quality flint from an unknown source . The analysis indicates that known sources of Cretaceous flint, including those used during the Epipaleolithic period in the region, were not used during the Neolithic period. This may reflect a change in the raw material base during the Epipaleolithic to Neolithic transition.
