Virtual Reality Basic Life Support and Defibrillation (BLSD) Guided Scenario: A Pilot Study

Cardiac arrest is a major global health problem. The early recognition of the Cardiac Arrest and initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as early automated external defibrillation are related to improvements in outcomes for patients with OHCA. Many new technologies for teaching CPR have become available in recent years, in particular, virtual reality (VR). Immersive technologies provide users with an engaging and enjoyable learning platform to train skills to proficiency without risking patient safety. Such technologies can be a powerful tool that increases public awareness and learning of life-saving skills, primarily due to the high level of immersivity, perceptual access to real-time scenarios, and impersonation. This study was a pilot trial to test a virtual reality BLSD scenario, incorporated with a half-body training mannequin for CPR practice in order to approximate the virtual experience to that of a traditional real BLSD course. The scenario created consists of an adult victim in cardiac arrest (unconscious, not breathing, no pulse, and required defibrillation), in an out-of-hospital context. A convenience sample of third-year nursing students and nurses (graduated less than one year) were involved. This pilot study found that the virtual reality BLSD scenario, incorporated with a life-size mannequin, was acceptable, and usability and level of presence experienced by participants were good. However, additional steps are required to complete the development of the virtual scenario.
