Historical Development and Progression in the Algal Biochemical Extraction Techniques

Algae are evidently seen to be perhaps one of the most promising routes to immense and valuable bio chemistries such as lipids, pigments, protein, and carbohydrates. Some of uses of this kind of compounds can be used in biofuels industry, production of pharmaceutical products, cosmetics as well as in the food industry. The efficiency of these biochemicals extraction and isolation has direct impact on the economic viability and sustainability of the utilization of algae. It also reviews the history of biochemical extraction of algae from the initial solvent extraction to the state of art methods for short extraction time, high selectivity, and environmental compliance. First of all, classical solvent extraction was the most popular method, which sometimes utilized highly toxic reagents. In this follow, came super critical fluid extraction and enzymes and mechanical processing like bead milling and ultrasonication. The last advances refer to the type of extraction that fits the properties of the algal species and the compounds of interest. The approach of multiple extraction steps was used and the combination of such methods with green solvents and principles of process intensification reveal potential for enhancement in efficiency and put into practice the principles of green chemistry. This prognosis for the global extraction technologies is presented in this abstract, which paints a right picture of clean, safe, and efficient extraction processes which is the need for algae to try to be a proper renewable resource.
