Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing: Noise and Electronic Distraction and the Impact on Quality Patient Care
摘要
The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the importance of noise stimulants, electronic equipment, and mobile devices as an increasing contributor to distraction of the perioperative team and the impact on patient quality care. In addition, the chapter will explore the impact of noise and distraction within the sterile processing department and its impact on the efficiency and quality of work performance. Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the surgical team. “Surgical Technologists work under the supervision a delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non- invasive surgical procedures (Association of Surgical Technology, 2024a).” Certified surgical technologists are sometimes referred to as the scrub nurse and perform in all three phases of the perioperative environment. Within central supply certified surgical technologists and certified registered central service technicians work to ensure that all medical, surgical, and healthcare equipment is cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized for safe use on patients. Noise and distraction and its impact on all areas of the healthcare environment are essential for quality patient care delivery.
