Anxiety significantly impacts learning and performance in nursing school. Anxiety stems primarily from internal responses that can interfere with well-being, critical thinking, and test performance. Understanding the physiologic response of anxiety as it relates to brain function—particularly the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus—helps students implement effective management strategies. This chapter examines both general anxiety and test anxiety in nursing school, providing evidence-based approaches for managing each type. Practical strategies for managing anxiety and addressing test anxiety are presented also with self-assessment tools. Interactive self-assessments and synthesis activities help students develop personalized approaches to managing stress. Understanding how and why anxiety affects learning and performance supports students’ ability to apply critical thinking to make behavioral changes that enhance success in nursing school and preparation for professional practice.
