Specific Management for Patients with Suicidal Ideation

Suicide is a significant global issue, and individuals with bipolar disorder have a strong association with suicidality. This chapter aims to address the main topics concerning clinical assessment, as well as treatment and prevention strategies for patients with suicidal ideation within the context of bipolar disorder. This chapter will discuss the levels of evidence associated with psychosocial interventions for the management of suicidal ideation. The recent advances and uncertainties regarding the use of lithium, as well as current data supporting the use of electroconvulsive therapy, will be explored. Finally, methods for suicide prevention and future perspectives will be presented.
