This chapter underscores the importance of a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to managing depressive episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. We dig into the fundamentals of pharmacological treatment, emphasizing the central role of mood stabilizers in conjunction with atypical antipsychotics and NMDA antagonists, and explore adjunctive resources such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for refractory cases. Emphasis is placed on the significance of a thorough psychoeducational approach, including a critical analysis of therapeutic interventions outside the pharmacological setting. We highlight the necessity for close coordination between mental health professionals and general practitioners, recognizing the relevance of relapse prevention and active patient engagement in their own care during the treatment of depressive episodes within the context of bipolar disorder.
