Introduction to Concussion
摘要
Concussions are a form of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) at a microscopic level. This microscopic axonal injury to the brain causes temporary dysfunction. Several different types of providers and specialists are often involved in the management of concussions. Concussions occur in various age groups and injury mechanisms (sports, military, falls, etc.) Beyond a medical office and emergency room, athletic trainers and nurses commonly complete the initial evaluation and facilitate school protocols and/or return-to-play of students and athletes. Each state in the United States has its own specific law on how concussions should be evaluated in students. All providers should become familiar with their specific state law and local school district policies (if applicable) regarding concussions. Several different guidelines and websites may be consulted for further information and public education.
