Food and nutrition insecurity continues to be a threat to the people in the arid and semi-arid parts of Ghana, especially under present climate change realities. Irrigated agriculture in such areas is therefore necessary to supplement rainfed production. Farmer-led irrigation (FLI) has been shown to have great potential in the Upper East Region of Ghana, thus its development is very necessary. For FLI to have the expected impact, men and women must play complementary and mutually rewarding roles. The research that resulted in this paper sought to identify the critical constraints and challenges both genders face in irrigated production and to proffer some solutions. The results show the subordinate role women play in irrigated agriculture in the study area because of several socio-economic challenges. The recommendation is that appropriate agroecological practices in irrigation will free irrigators, especially the women, from the perennial issue of lack of resources to purchase expensive imported inputs. There is also need for significant governmental interventions to provide water lifting devices that are convenient for women.

摘要
