Infections are ubiquitous worldwide, particularly among children, and are one of the main causes of childhood mortality in acute disaster settings. Infectious concerns increase during disasters secondary to various factors, including displacement of populations, crowded living conditions, breakdown of primary care and public health infrastructure, poor sanitation, and exacerbation of malnutrition. This chapter guides readers through the World Health Organization’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines as one tool to assess, triage, and treat children presenting to care in a disaster setting. This chapter also reviews general concepts surrounding outbreak management, acute infections (e.g., acute respiratory illnesses, measles, vector-borne diseases, meningitis, and diarrheal infections), considerations of other infections in disaster settings (e.g., tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS), and vaccinations.
