This chapter deals with the relationship between tourism and destinations sustainability from a theoretical point of view. The nature of “public goods” of both the environment and tourism resources leads to the use of microeconomic tools to identify the connection between economic choices and the impact on society. A complex picture emerges in which tourism is sustainable if both aspects related to the environment and those related to the balance in society are considered. The natural consequence of this complexity is that the “optimal solutions” depend on the context and the nature of destination to which they are applied and cannot be qualified as universally valid.

摘要

This chapter deals with the relationship between tourism and destinations sustainability from a theoretical point of view. The nature of “public goods” of both the environment and tourism resources leads to the use of microeconomic tools to identify the connection between economic choices and the impact on society. A complex picture emerges in which tourism is sustainable if both aspects related to the environment and those related to the balance in society are considered. The natural consequence of this complexity is that the “optimal solutions” depend on the context and the nature of destination to which they are applied and cannot be qualified as universally valid.
