Epidemiology, Indications and Contraindications of Mandibular Third Molar Extraction

Removal of the mandibular third molar is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Surgical removal is used for various reasons, e.g. pericoronitis, dental caries, destruction of the adjacent tissues, odontogenic cysts, and tumours. This procedure has potential complications. Therefore, all clinicians need to understand the indications and contraindications of mandibular third molar removal.
