Long-Term Soil Research

In Korea, long-term test fieldsLong-term soil research have been crucial for agricultural research, with two fields operating for over 20–70 years: one for paddy soils and one for upland soils. Additionally, there are two fields in operation for less than 15 years and five for less than 10 years, focusing on various soil types, including organic and reclaimed soils, and fields across different climateClimate zones. The longest-running field is the paddy soil test field in Suwon, established in 1954 at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Historically, these fields have focused on evaluating crop yieldsCrop yield and nutrient behavior. Recently, new interpretations have emerged, such as assessing the carbon storage potential of agricultural land through changes in organic carbon. To enhance the use of long-term field data, establishing a steering committee is essential for fostering collaboration among researchers and external partners and engaging in international cooperation networks. Additionally, creating new fields to monitor changes in the agro-environment due to climateClimatechangeClimate change(s) and introducing new substances, like agricultural inputs, in existing test fields is crucial.
