This chapter introduces the physical properties of soil in Korea. The predominant soil textureSoil texture is silty loam, followed by loam and other textures, while the most common soil structureSoil structure is semi-angular blocky. Soil temperaturesSoil temperature are found to range from 10 to 25 °C from April to November and from 0 to 10 °C from December to March, with southern regions generally exhibiting higher temperatures than northern areas. Significant temperature variations occur at a depth of 20 cm, with deeper layers displaying more stable thermal conditions. In Korea, 33 soil colorsSoil color have been identified, with yellow–brown and dark brown being the most prevalent, influenced primarily by organic matter, redox state, and moisture content. Soil colorSoil color in upland fields appears reddish, while paddy fields exhibit bluish-gray or greenish hues. Soil compaction varies according to soil type and hydrological conditions, with intrinsic factors (e.g., texture, moisture) and extrinsic factors (e.g., climateClimate, farming methods) playing significant roles. The subsoil bulk density values range from 1.54 Mg/m3 in sandy and coarse loamy textures to 1.46 Mg/m3 in fine silty and clayey textures. The National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (NIAS) conducts regular surveys of soil physical properties across diverse cultivation sites, detailing parameters such as flow depth, texture, bulk density, and organic matter content.
