The Jews were the primary focus of Erasmus’s ethnic prejudice in his writings, whether it is referred to by scholars as antisemitism, Judeophobia, or anti-Judaism. Examining Erasmus’s ethnic prejudices in the adages raises the important question of their place in the Adagia. No less challenging is the question of whether the proverbs are related to Jewish wisdom or sources, or if they resonate with any of them. Hitherto, these issues have not been studied, which is why a discussion is dedicated to examining them. Erasmus did integrate a few Hebrew Biblical proverbs in his collection, but his explicit reliance on the Hebrew Bible was negligible. Proverbs from the Book of Proverbs are mentioned by Erasmus several times in the Adagia in cases where the Greek or Roman proverb has an equivalent or comparable proverb. As one would expect, Erasmus did not make use of Talmudic resources, nor did he draw upon the wisdom of Jewish Sages (elaborated in this chapter).
