Digital Redlining: Past and Present Motivations
摘要
This paper aims to bring about an interdisciplinary examination of the motivations behind digital redlining. Digital redlining is a form of violence that can impact marginalized groups in many different aspects of life. While there are other examples of digital redlining that will be mentioned, the case of Facebook is a very developed one. It shows how many different organizations come together to challenge digital redlining and the results of those actions. These organizations have their own ways of challenging Facebook, whether that be through investigations of Facebook’s advertisement system, lawsuits, or charges brought against Facebook with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This paper reveals that the motivations behind redlining and digital redlining match the assumed justifications for why a major company like Facebook would perpetuate systemic biases such as redlining through their social media platform. This paper will add to the current literature surrounding digital redlining, presenting a new perspective that combines technical and sociological perspectives in the analysis.
