Sustainable Resilience for Integrated Watersheds Management Under Climate Change: Lesson Learned from Indonesia

This book chapter explores the importance of realizing sustainable watershed resilience under climate change, focusing on Indonesia. As an island nation with high economic and population growth, climate change navigates the complex interactions between environmental sustainability and food and water security, which requires a deep understanding of the complexity of the factors involved. Numerous studies of climate change impacts on the sustainable resilience of watersheds have been conducted; however, more comprehensive studies that integrate biophysical and social aspects need to be conducted. Indonesia’s watershed degradation is substantial, with over 4,489 watersheds identified as necessitating restoration, affecting over 106 million hectares of land. In 2024, it is anticipated that the proposed integrated watershed management strategies will enhance the resilience of over 108 priority watersheds, reduce the risk of flood and drought, and restore ecosystem functions. This chapter thoroughly examines various cases and real-world examples to highlight key lessons from Indonesia’s initiatives to manage watersheds amid growing climate change challenges. Based on the authors’ insights and experience and enriched by a systematic literature review, this chapter aims to develop a new concept on adaptive strategies, policy frameworks, and community engagement, which are essential for navigating the complexities of climate change in watershed management. It delves into the social, economic, and ecological aspects of resilience and investigates the impact of stakeholders, governance frameworks, and community participation in fostering sustainable watershed resilience. This book chapter highlights the existing strategies and policy interventions and the author’s recommendations for encouraging sustainable watershed resilience. We recommend a holistic and forward-looking approach that prioritizes sustainable resilience in two primary focuses: (1) integrated and adaptive watershed management practices and (2) evidence-based policy and adaptive governance.
