Climate Change Challenge: Coastal Community Adaptation Towards Achieving Sustainable Community Resilience in Central Java, Indonesia

Climate change presents considerable difficulties for coastal populations in northern Central Java, Indonesia, with particular emphasis on Semarang and Demak City. These regions are confronted with various threats, including elevated sea levels, land subsidence, abrasion, tidal floods, and severe weather events, all of which endanger the livelihoods of residents, agricultural productivity, infrastructure, and everyday activities. To mitigate these challenges, it is crucial to adopt inclusive and sustainable adaptation measures, which encompass the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, economic diversification, effective spatial planning, and community education initiatives. This research investigates the adaptation strategies employed by coastal communities to bolster their resilience, concentrating on essential elements such as food security, economic flexibility, and environmental sustainability, with specific initiatives like mangrove restoration. The study seeks to address two primary inquiries: how do coastal communities adapt to climate change, considering their geographic and social characteristics; and, to what extent have these adaptation efforts contributed to sustainable community resilience in coastal areas? Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study aims to provide in-depth insights by analyzing both primary and secondary data, including literature reviews, legal frameworks, and interviews with government officials, community members, and civil society representatives. The outcomes of this research are intended to enhance the understanding of policymakers, equipping them to devise more effective strategies, identify existing deficiencies, and create programs that support the adaptation of coastal communities while promoting sustainable resilience in the context of climate change challenges.
