Confronting LGBTQ Issues in Strategic Communication: President Akufo-Addo’s Response to the LGBTQ Bill in Ghana
摘要
Attention has now been shifted to the issue of human rights, gender, and sexuality in African society. Ghana is no stranger to the sensitive debate that hovers in the minds of its citizens. The recent visit of the Vice President of the United States raised eyebrows regarding the issue of LGBTQ rights in some African countries. In response, some countries in Africa have not clearly stated their position for or against such bills in their countries. This ambiguity has led to the use of strategic communication through public relations and economic relations by politicians and people in higher positions in society. Little research has been conducted on how some politicians in Africa communicate their stands on the ongoing discussion of LGBTQ rights, specifically in Ghana. By identifying the themes, channels, target audience, and messages, this study will evaluate the use of language, ambiguity, and tone in the President of Ghana’s response to the US media. Also, this research will discuss the economic and diplomatic relations between Ghana and the United States and their effects concerning the LGBTQ bill.
