The chapter examines the complexities and evolving dynamics of multilateralism within global governance, focusing primarily on the dynamics seen in the United Nations (UN) and its Security Council (UNSC). While multilateralism underpins the rules-based global order, it is increasingly challenged by regional power rivalries, institutional stagnation, and emerging global threats. The UNSC, as a vital international space for global security and multilateralism, still faces much criticism and scrutiny for its decision-making process, limited representation of emerging powers, and veto disparities. This chapter will introduce many insights into the book’s contents on the UNSC voting patterns, coalition formation, and the interplay of permanent (P5) and elected (E10) members. It also explores the roles of regional organizations like the European Union (EU) in complementing the UN’s multilateral efforts. Despite criticism and challenges, this introduction highlights the lasting relevance of multilateralism (and the UNSC) in addressing global peace, stability and crises such as COVID-19 while promoting international cooperation amidst shifting geopolitical realities.

摘要
