The impact of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the global health setting is extensive. POCUS is often the only imaging modality in resource-limited environments. Moreover, its portability, varied clinical applications and comparatively low cost, make it an indispensable tool in these settings. Technical considerations, the importance of pre-departure preparation, the need for ongoing training and quality assurance, and the challenges of working in remote environments are all important facets to consider. Strategies for successful global POCUS education include recognizing local champions, creating sustainable partnerships, leveraging technology for remote quality assurance, mentorship, and the potential for integrating artificial intelligence into ultrasound education. POCUS can aid in the management of regionally-specific conditions, narrow differential diagnoses in settings where testing options are limited, and assist in the management of acute exacerbations of chronic conditions. Successful programs will understand local epidemiology, integrate into the existing health networks, and build capacity by creating longitudinal partnerships with local champions.
