In the United States, maternal morbidity and mortality rates continue to rise, likely due to barriers in accessing high-quality maternal healthcare. Women who lack prenatal care resources or have chronic medical conditions are more likely to seek emergency care during pregnancy. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for the obstetric patient can help evaluate and manage patients throughout the entire pregnancy. This chapter discusses the POCUS techniques, indications, and diagnoses of the POCUS obstetric examination. In the first trimester, the POCUS obstetric examination can elicit causes of vaginal bleeding such as an ectopic pregnancy. In the second and third trimester, the POCUS obstetric examination can evaluate fetal well-being and complications that can affect labor such as placenta previa.
