This chapter considers whether humans are unique and/or superior in the animal kingdom. If we are either of these, then we can rightly claim some authority to control or even manage other animal species. But if we are not, then we must take our place among evolution’s race contestants in the battle for ownership of the planet. If humans were selected by a god to utilise other animals, we might expect them to have some unique characteristics that distinguish them from other animals. This warrants inspection to determine whether humans have any unique characteristics that would make them special. The increasingly common view is that all the characteristics that have been proposed have been found to exist to some extent in other animals, thereby dispelling the long-held view by society that humans are special in some way.
