In this chapter, we review the most important basics related to power transformers theory of operation as well as some design aspects. More specifically, this chapter presents a brief review of Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law, the magnetic circuit concept, differences between DC and AC magnetic circuits, approximation of the core B-H characteristics, the power transformer equivalent circuit, and the cooling requirements as a function of power rating.
