This chapter presents methods for systematically exploring, observing, deciding and designing counselling processes in extremism prevention. It begins with strategies for building rapport, securing trust and clarifying explicit or hidden assignments—often amid multiple, sometimes competing, “clients.” Guidelines follow for translating gathered information into shared goals, working contracts and testable working hypotheses that steer the intervention. Further techniques help uncover not only problems but also resources, monitor progress and setbacks, and minimise premature discontinuation of counselling. Finally, the chapter outlines how to choreograph a constructive termination phase, enabling a respectful separation and consolidating the client’s gains.
