Hair loss is a progressive disease that must be managed with medical therapy to slow down and to partially reverse the problem and surgery when deemed safe to do so, considering that a patient has ongoing dwindling of donor hair supply and increasing hair loss over one’s lifetime. This chapter covers some basic parameters of when to intervene with surgery, specifically covering the linear-strip excision (LSE) method, which is the traditional way to harvest hairs via a linear incision, as compared with the newer method follicular unit excision (FUE). This chapter also covers when to perform which procedure based on distinct advantages and disadvantages of each method. This chapter cannot cover all aspects of how to perform this procedure but provides a comprehensive introduction to the surgeon wanting to explore this topic more in depth.
