Hair Loss, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning
摘要
Patients presenting with hair loss necessitate a medical and an aesthetic approach to properly diagnose and manage the underlying often multifactorial causes. Hair disorders profoundly affect a patient’s physical self-perception and self-esteem. Most hair loss complaints are related to female pattern hair loss (FPHL) or male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia, AGA), or stress-related shedding like telogen effluvium (TE). Recognizing scarring, autoimmune, or infectious causes can prevent permanent scarring. A detailed history, dermoscopy, laboratory testing, and a skin biopsy all can aid in prompt and correct diagnosis. Management can be a challenging task and involves a tailored approach with medical, pharmacotherapeutic, psychotherapeutic, and cosmetic approaches. Novel medical uses of antiandrogens and biologics, as well as cosmetic treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hair transplant, light and laser treatments, and supplements provide additional tools in management of alopecia.
