Human beings recognize each other through identification of physical characteristics—often indicating the approximate age of the person. As we age, there are predictable changes that occur in the makeup of the face; such changes are often the target of rejuvenation and restorative procedures. It is imperative that cosmetic surgeons, and any physician performing restorative procedures, have an intimate understanding of facial anatomy and the way in which the structures of the face evolve with maturity. In this chapter, we illustrate the age-related changes that take place in three main categories of the face: the bone, soft tissue, and the skin itself.
