The phenomenon of human smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants by offering safe passage to the UK via the Channel represents a serious threat to UK security. There is an ongoing and significant problem with human smugglers facilitating small boats to carry migrants across the English Channel to the UK. Many tragedies have been reported at sea where people are drowning from overcrowded dinghies and inflatable boats which capsize whilst trying to cross the English Channel. The present response from the UK government in combatting this crime takes the view that the migrants themselves are to blame for this, rather than tackling the organised crime groups facilitating these operations. Finally, the chapter briefly references the now in limbo proposed Rwanda plan which seeks to remove migrants from the UK to Rwanda to have their claims for asylum assessed outside of the UK signifies a significant move to deterring vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees away from the UK’s international legal obligations which have been in force and adopted for many decades.
