Goals give direction and meaning to life. Strong goal-directed skills, or intentional self-regulation skills, are linked to health, success, and thriving across the lifespan. A central aim and activity in many youth development programs is supporting young people as they set and pursue their goals. Youth development practitioners can play a key role in this process. In this chapter, we describe three skills youth use to set, pursue, and achieve their goals, and we review the evidence base linking these skills to diverse positive youth development outcomes. We also detail ways that youth development practitioners can promote the development of these skills, and we discuss implications for how youth, practitioner, and program characteristics should be considered when supporting this skill growth in youth. Finally, we offer additional resources to build practitioner capacity to strengthen youth goal-directed skills. Working with young people to set and pursue goals may be one of the most important activities in which youth development practitioners engage as goals ultimately impact the directions young people’s lives take.
