The Development of a Hopeful Purpose
摘要
Adolescence marks an important period of identity exploration and cognitive development, creating a unique opportunity for youth to cultivate a sense of purpose. This chapter explores the concept of purpose as a meaningful intention that transcends self-interest, fosters hope, and promotes well-being among youth. Drawing on theory and empirical research, this chapter examines the importance of youth purpose, its connection to identity development and hopeful future expectations, and the pathways through which purpose develops. Barriers to purpose development, including societal pressures and marginalization, are also explored. The chapter also highlights how exposure to purposeful activities, supportive mentoring relationships, and structured opportunities for self-reflection in positive youth development programs like 4-H can support the development of purpose in diverse youth. Practical implications for educators and practitioners emphasize the need for individualized approaches that promote reflection, agency, and alignment of personal passions with community contributions. Ultimately, the chapter underscores purpose as a cornerstone of thriving that enables youth to envision and pursue a hopeful and meaningful future.
