Cultivating developmental relationships is foundational to equity-centered youth development practice and to the 4-H Thriving Model. This chapter introduces the theory and research behind Search Institute’s Framework of Developmental Relationships, which features five elements: Express Care, Challenge Growth, Provide Support, Share Power, and Expand Possibilities, highlighting the research and practice implications of each and their prevalence and impact in the lives of young people who participate in youth development programs. Finally, we offer five specific strategies to optimize the power of developmental relationships within youth development programs as part of a commitment to youth equity and thriving, drawing on both the research evidence and the experiences of youth development professionals.
