This chapter brings the history of the ‘Klockars scale’ scenario-based research on police misconduct up to date. It looks at the most recent iteration of the survey by the authors of this volume (Westmarland and Conway 2020). It draws upon evidence from a survey administered in 2018, which was explored in the previous chapter. In this chapter however, the qualitative data from the survey is analysed for the first time. At the end of the survey explored in the previous chapter, respondents were offered an ‘anything else to add’ option following the scenarios and many of them did have very valuable points to make. This chapter explores those written comments, firstly by looking at some general questions and remarks around why respondents might or might not report a colleagues’ misbehaviour. It then moves on to look at some specific comments in the light of the scenarios—not in any sense ‘answers’ to our questions, but certainly a beam of light reveals some of the thinking behind the responses the participants had offered by way of the quantitative data, explored in the previous chapter.
