This chapter begins by explaining the autoethnographic nature of the evidence in the book. It shows how the book will take the reader from early attempts in the 1970s to measure police integrity, though a middle period in the 2000s, and a later period from 2011 up to the present day. It provides some definitions of integrity, corruption and police ethics and discusses the blue code of silence. It introduces the statutory requirement and regulations around police misconduct and outlines a brief history of how the research upon which this book is based was collected. The role of police culture is introduced in terms of the adherence to the blue code and then the chapter concludes with an overview of the themes of the book and its contents.
